Some well-known music artists are among the celebrities that have lent their names to an open letter encouraging Hawaiian residents to support legislation that will protect endangered wildlife species. Aerosmith’s Steven Tyler, Fleetwood Mac’s Mick Fleetwood and The Grateful Dead’s Bill Kreutzmann all support the proposed bill, which would ban the sale of items made from tusks, horns, fur and other parts of animals such as elephants, rhinos and tigers.
According to the letter, which is posted on the International Fund for Animal Welfare’s website, IFAW.org, Hawaii is the third largest state market in the U.S. for wildlife products, after New York and California, and may soon be #1 since the other two states already have passed laws banning the sale of ivory and rhino horns.
The message also maintains that banning sales of goods made from wild animals could curb the activities of poachers as the markets for the products dwindle. The letter directs people to support the legislation by signing an online petition at HawaiiSavesWildlife.org.
Among the other celebs who have signed the letter are Willie Nelson, Pearl Jam’s Eddie Vedder, Nickelback’s Michael Kroeger, Woody Harrelson and Pierce Brosnan.
